Helping women have a safe childbirth

BECAUSE every woman has the right to a clean and safe childbirth, the Zonta club of Warwick is calling for volunteers to help at the annual birthing kit assembly day this morning.

For almost a decade the women's group has hosted the event to assemble and package the kits which include one square metre of plastic, soap, gloves, cord, a scalpel and five pieces of sterile gauze.

Zonta member Sally Carr said the Warwick group hoped to package 1000 kits.

"It's wonderful how something so simple can make such a big difference to someone's life," she said.

The kits are purchased from The Birthing Kit Foundation of Australia at $3 each and sent back to them for distribution to women in disadvantaged countries.

The money for the project was raised from the Zonta Club of Warwick annual Australia Day breakfast.
