Beefeaters going for nine straight in Warwick junior cricket

CRICKET: Teams are made up each season in Warwick junior cricket to make an even competition so it is a surprise a team under one name is eyeing off a ninth successive premiership in Saturday's under-15 grand final at Slade Park.

U15 and U12 grand finals and U10 cricket start at 8am Saturday.

In U15s, Warwick Sand and Gravel Diggers are the minor premiers and will play perennial heavyweights Gross Meats Beefeaters.

To field four teams in U15 cricket, teams field less than 11 players but that just means more batting and bowling for each player.

A Gross family member has been in the winning Beefeaters team for the past eight seasons. Initially it was Lachlan and at times two Gross boys were in the winning team.

Ben and Jacob played in the 2014-2015 win, Jacob won last year and will play his last game of Warwick junior club cricket for Beefeaters tomorrow. Will Gross is in U12s and could be a Beefeaters recruit in years to come.

In the semi-finals, Diggers scored a convincing win against Urban Mist Coffee Grinders with Will Ole scoring a half century at a strike rate of 200.

The Beefeaters beat Choices Flooring Carpet Snakes in the semi-final. Jacob Gross top scored with 62 after scoring 87 in last season's grand final win against the Snakes.

Many of the U15 players are already starring in Warwick senior cricket for a number of different clubs.

In the under-12 season decider, Kookaburras will play Taipans in the grand final at the Queens Park synthetic at 8am.

U12 games are generally at Warwick East State School but the grand final has been moved to the synthetic at Queens Park which is the home ground for the U12 Warwick representative team which was inter-town runners-up this season.

Minor premiers Sharks were beaten by Kookaburras in last Saturday's semi-final.

Tom Doherty scored 67 for Kookaburras to steer his team into the grand final after being in the same team in last year's grand final.

The leading run scorers for the Taipans this season have been Jayden Munro and Lucy Bourke.

Laura Scheiwe really improved after playing for the President's XI in the state girls championships this season and worries plenty of batsmen with her left arm wrist spin.

Daniel Shepherd plays for the Kookaburras and is much improved with bat and ball.

The U10s do not play a grand final but will be playing their last game this season at Glennie Heights from 8am. tomorrow.

Warwick junior cricket president Andrew Bryson said players and families would then head down to Slade Park for presentations and a free sausage sizzle for all players.

"Shane Cartwright and Troy March have been our co-ordinators this year and have done a great job along with Brett Farrell in developing the skills of our newest and youngest cricketers in the under 10s,” Bryson said.

Senior cricket semis are from 12.30pm tomorrow and 10am Sunday.
