Big hits and upsets at MMA fight night

MMA: Spectators at Grow Strong Fight Night 2 weren’t disappointed, as big hits and upsets rang throughout the arena.

With over 400 spectators, the 12-fight competition had categories for all to enjoy.

Wawick-based fighters Steven Blows and Jimmy O’Mara headlined the stacked line-up, with Blows claiming a victory in the 75kg catchweight bout.

Grow Strong MMA owner and trainer Ben Pepper said Blows’ win was a credit to his experience in the ring.

“Steven executed the game plan – he threw more punches than I wanted him to, but he worked for a submission,” Pepper said.

“He spent lot more time on his feet than we’d planned but it worked out in the end.

“As you get through more fights, you develop your game plan differently, and Steve is an experienced fighter and knows what he needs to do.”

While Jimmy O’Mara, the second Warwick-based fighter, didn’t win, Pepper said they know the areas he needs to improve om.

“Now that we’ve seen Jimmy fight again, we need to go back and develop some more of his grappling skills,” he said.

“That was his biggest letdown on the night – we know he’s a good striker, but he just needs to ... work on that.”
