'Big Lady' features in exhibition

SHE arrived in two trucks, her head and body in one and her legs in another.

It took a whole day to put her together so she would be ready for her grand unveiling tonight at 6 o'clock.

Dubbed 'The Big Lady' by Artspace Mackay staff, she is a sculpture by famous London-based, international artist Ron Mueck, measuring a staggering 6.5m x 1.6m x 4.5m.

Artspace Mackay acting director Anna Thurgood said 'The Big Lady' was the largest artwork to be exhibited at the gallery.

She is part of a travelling exhibition, officially titled 'In Bed', from the Queensland Art Gallery's state collection.

"I am positive that 'In Bed' will bring not only the locals but draw art admirers from surrounding towns and cities to Artspace Mackay," Ms Thurgood said.

Visitors can gain an insight into Ron Mueck's creative process via a video installation that is part of the exhibition.

'In Bed' and a separate exhibition 'A Perfect Prize for Donny' open tonight.

Admission is free.

The gallery is open from 10am-5pm, Tuesday- Saturday.
