Big league for rookie

ROOKIE Central Comets fullback Daniel Bartlett is certainly making an impression.

Bartlett signed a two-year deal with the Brisbane Broncos last weekend and will join the 2011 NRL contenders for the pre-season early in November.

After moving up through the ranks in the Mal Meninga Cup statewide under-18 competition earlier this year, Bartlett linked with the 2011 premiers Yeppoon Seagulls in the local competition and continued to impress.

Bartlett was promoted to the Comets Intrust Super Cup team a few matches later and hasn't looked back.

Scoring a try in his Queensland Cup debut and helping the Comets to a record-breaking 30-22 win over the Northern Pride in Cairns earlier this year, the 17-year-old grew in stature as the season progressed and played in all but one of the Comets remaining matches.

His form not only caught the attention of Comets coach Wayne Barnett, but the eye of a host of clubs.

"He's a great kid who made the most of an opportunity," Barnett said.

"It's a great chance for him to take that pathway to the top."

The Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm both expressed interest in signing the youngster to their Toyota Cup squads, but it was the Broncos who won Bartlett's signature.

The slight in stature, but lightning quick fullback proved he could match it in Australia's second best competition, and now has sights on breaking into the top echelon in the sport.

"I can't wait to get down there and start training with them," he said.

"I went down a couple weeks ago and met the under-20s coach Kurt Richards and (NRL coach) Anthony Griffin." Bartlett, who signed his deal on Saturday, knew the Broncos was the right club for him after spending time with one of the Broncos' biggest indigenous stars and 2012 captain, Sam Thaiday.
