
Bikes test out new circuit
THE final round of the Queensland Road Race Championships was held on the new Morgan Park Raceway circuit at the weekend.
Riders from throughout Queensland and NSW competed in 10 categories of racing including moto, 125GP/250GP mono and clubsports, formula 400/formula 3, superbikes, sidecars and supersport/sew era during the two-day event.
One regular to the Warwick track is 16-year-old Mike Jones from Brisbane.
The 2009 250 GP mono champion said he has been racing bikes for about 10 years and is currently racing in the Superstock Series on his 600cc Yamaha.
Besides racing in the Superstock Series Mike has just finished third overall in the Superstock 600 in the ASBK Championship.
Mike said his 600cc four-cylinder Yamaha which produces about 110 horsepower has a top speed of 270 kilometres per hour.
His fastest lap of the new Morgan Park circuit was clocked at 1 minute 22.3 seconds.
Mike’s father Chris Jones, who works on the bikes, said they raced one weekend a month and attended track days and practice days most months.
The Year 11 student said he hopes to continue motorbike racing, and said his long-term goal was to contest the World Championship Moto GP.
