Biography heralds Dr Joe Baker's life in science and league
RUGBY LEAGUE: A biography of one of Warwick's most noted scientists and rugby league players will be launched at the Warwick Art Gallery this month.
The Warwick launch of Biography of Joe Baker, at 4pm on July 31, will be one of five around Australia, with the others to be held in Brisbane, Townsville, Canberra and Merimbula.
Author Angelika Erpic traced the life of the late Dr Baker AO OBE, who died in January, in the fields of science, sustainability, respect and rugby league.
Dr Baker was the chief scientist of the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Hermitage Research Station staff Kerrie Rubie and Andrew Borrell will say a few words at the Warwick launch.
It was in rugby league where Dr Baker first made his mark. A classy lock, he was named in the Warwick Team of the Century and was at the team launch.
Ex-Warwick footballer Paul Coote will speak on Dr Baker's contribution to rugby league.
Baker played for Queensland in 1959. His father, Dick Baker, also played for the state.
Joe Baker attended Warwick East State School and Warwick State High School before entering the field of science.
Such was his impact in the field, Dr Baker was named among the first 'Queensland Greats' list in 2001.
As a university student in Brisbane, Baker had a job driving new cars from Brisbane to Warwick at the weekend, playing rugby league in Warwick and getting a ride back to Brisbane with a milk tanker driver.
