Birds make big sales at Pig and Calf markets

SCHOOL children filled the Warwick Pig and Calf sale yesterday with kids looking for a chance to pick up some bargains these school holidays.

All kinds of birds from budgies to ducks seemed to be the most popular amongst the children.

One family was particularly excited to be away from school and to add to their budgerigar collection.

Mother of two Brooke Sense said the family enjoyed breeding the birds and loved to watch them grow.

"It's nice and easy to breed them and most of our budgies are starting to nest now," she said.

Brooke and her partner head down to the pig and calf sale every Wednesday to look for potential birds.

She said the sales had been lacking budgies lately but yesterday was a success.

The family bought about 14 birds yesterday to add to their collection of budgies and cockatiels.

Her children, Chloe and Dominic, were excited about the new additions.

Ducks were also up for grabs yesterday with one couple selling 39 ducks at the sale.

Tegan Lambert and her partner Jay Emerton said their farm was full of ducks.

"We've got heaps of ducks and they just keep breeding," Miss Lambert said.

It was the couple's first time selling ducks at the weekly sale.

It was also their three-month-old daughter's first pig and calf market.

"There seems to be a few people here taking a look at them," she said.

The pair said they would be happy to get about $15 a duck.
