Black spot safety works in Warwick ‘will make a difference’

SCHEDULED safety upgrades to black spot intersections in Warwick could save lives and reduce crashes, according to road safety advocates.

The Southern Downs Regional Council will begin the upgrades at five intersections this week.

Improved signage, traffic islands and line marking will all be used to improve safety at the intersections of:

Guy and Pratten St

Grafton and Wantley St

Dragon and Fitzroy St

Pratten and Tooth St

Grafton and Canning St

Driving instructor and road safety group member Andrew Gale said the upgrades would make the intersections more visible.

"These are good cost effective ways to bring awareness to the intersections," he said.

"People get tunnel vision driving along and don't notice the intersections.

"I can guarantee if I took a driving school student along some of these roads, around 50% wouldn't notice the stop signs."

Mr Gale said while people have called for traffic lights at some of the intersections, he wanted to see more cost effective fixes spread to more intersections in Warwick.

"It's been an eye opener for me and other road safety group members just how expensive some of this road infrastructure can be," he said.

"These black spot proposals are about establishing median strips and putting signage in the centre of the road.

"I'm pretty convinced they will be very effective."

The upgrades are being funded through the Black Spot Program.
