Allora goalkeeper triumphs in Diamonds World Cup win

"WINNERS" was the cheer from five Warwick netballers celebrating the Australian Diamonds victory in the Netball World Cup in Sydney when called last night by the Daily News.

The win was a personal triumph for Allora goalkeeper and former Warwick player Laura Geitz who captained the side at a World Cup for the first time and played in a 58-55 grand final victory against the New Zealand Silver Ferns.

"Laura had an absolute blinder in the grand final," Warwick Netball Association secretary Linda Bunch.

Warwick player Mandy Creed said "Laura shut shooter Bailey Mes down for the whole game, particularly in the first quarter.

"It is one of the best game I have seen Laura play, she put everything out there on the court and left nothing behind," Creed said.

Bunch said the two defenders, Geitz and the retiring Julie Corletto, received the biggest cheers at the start of the game.

Player Sarah Mantova, of Clifton, said it was amazing to be at the World Cup.

"Laura made a great intercept on Saturday and showed she really wanted the final win," she said.

Geitz told the press in Sydney she was proud of her team bouncing back from their loss earlier in the tournament to New Zealand.

"To finish like that in front of our home crowd, to have family here and to play with that particular group of girls, to play with Julie Corletto, it's wonderful to step into the defensive circle with such a wonderful athlete," Geitz said.
