PETER Blundell is officially the mayor-elect of the Southern Downs Regional Council, with the mayoral ballot result officially declared this morning.

Returning officer Garry Adcock said the Electoral Commission of Queensland 9ECQ) had authorised the declaration of the mayoral poll three days earlier than expected, due to Cr Blundell's overwhelming lead over the other seven mayoral candidates.

Cr Blundell finished the count with 6310 votes or 34.5 per cent of postal ballots returned out of 23,752 issued.

The next-placed contender was Mally McMurtrie, with 2981 votes or 16.3 per cent of the overall votes returned.

An official declaration of the councillor ballot will not take place before Tuesday. Cr Jo McNally is maintaining her lead in the councillor top eight, 73 votes ahead of Ross Bartley.

Update to follow.
