Board refuses to re-register QLD Regional Health Secretary

A SOUTHEAST Queensland MP has been ordered to pay legal costs after an unsuccessful appeal to be re-registered as an eye specialist.

Prior to entering politics, shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Health Services and Indigenous Health Andrew Laming worked as an ophthalmologist and he wanted to re-register so he could do volunteer work in Aboriginal communities.

Dr Laming's two-year bid for re-registration was refused after the Medical Board of Australia granted six time extensions to complete the required paperwork.

Dr Laming, the Liberal National Party member for Bowman, appealed that decision at Queensland Civil and Administrative Appeal Tribunal, at the same time as he re-applied to the Medical Board.

While QCAT dismissed his appeal in March, the Medical Board approved his second application.
