Boost for rugby sevens with successful school carnival

RUGBY SEVENS: Team numbers were up four from last year as the Scots PGC College hosted a sevens tournament at Briggs and Dunning ovals.

Games were played in six age groups with each team playing three or four games.

Fifty-four games were played on the day.

Downs teams won the open competitions for boys and girls. The team mainly comprised students from Downlands College and Toowoomba Grammar School.

Schools participated from as far as Dalby and Toowoomba in Queensland. The Armidale School from the New England region of NSW played in the carnival.

Scots PGC open boys team member Tom Winter said the best performance by his team was in a game against Our Lady of the Southern Cross.

"We were in front and let it slip,” he said.

"The boys all played pretty well. Harry Keenan was strong in the forwards in his first game of rugby.”

While he said his preference was for 15-man rugby union, Winter said it was fun to play in the sevens carnival at the college.
