Boost for Southern Cross club from council

BOWLS: The Southern Cross Bowls Club has received a boost with a grant from the Southern Downs Regional Council through the 2016-2017 Community Support Program.

Club secretary/treasurer Cheryl Wickham said the asbestos roof was removed from the clubhouse and replaced with Colorbond sheeting in April this year.

"At that time, we discovered that the electrical switch box was the old fuse type on an asbestos board,” she said.

"The Southern Cross Bowls Club Management Committee is committed to ensuring a strong focus is placed on workplace health and safety requirements for their members, volunteers and visitors so decided that the switchboard needed upgrading.”

At the same time, Southern Downs Regional Council was ready to open the 2016-2017 Community Support Program for funding for organisations that operate community halls primarily for community use.

Wickham said the club decided to lodge an application for a project to install safety switches on the circuit and a new switchboard.

"When Council advised that our application for $1648 towards the project had been successful, we wasted no time getting our electrician to install safety switches on the circuits,” she said.

The club has recently celebrated its 70th anniversary and has been based on the same site for its entire existence. Membership numbers are up and some facility upgrades have enabled the club to go ahead in leaps and bounds.
