Boost in signatures for petition to ban sports betting info

AN ONLINE petition calling for a ban on sports betting information being broadcast during live sporting events has attracted almost 20,000 signatures.

The petition was created by Mathew Cowden at change.org less than a month ago.

Mr Cowden is aiming for 25,000 signatures before seeking to have petition tabled in the Senate.

"It is beyond dispute that gambling is an addictive and potentially devastating pastime and yet advertising for it is allowed to be inextricably interwoven with glamorous sports coverage, heavily watched by young Australians not yet old enough to understand its dangers," the petition reads.

"We, the undersigned, respectfully call on those in Canberra charged with caring for the nation's welfare to move beyond mere empty rhetoric, and actually do something - place a ban on this iniquitous practice, that can and will be enforced."
