Border chalk up a win in Roma

A WIN against Northern Wide Bay was the high point of a strong South-west Country performance in the 47th Battalion carnival at Roma.

Eight Border players were in the Country team, John Trindall (Killarney), Jason Wilmot, Kyle Marsh , Brendan Perkins (Stanthorpe), Jake Kelly, Jack Daniel, Brendan Minns and Jarrod McIntosh (Tenterfield).

South-west Country lost 24-16 to Rockhampton with winger Michael Purcell from Mitchell scoring three times for Country. Jason Wilmot landed two goals.

On Saturday afternoon, Border beat North Wide Bay 32-10.

Purcell scored three tries, Jeremy Weatherall, Zac Donney and Eddie Flynn scored a try each and Wilmot kicked four goals.

Border went down 38-0 to Bundaberg yesterday morning.

Purcell won player of the match in the win against Wide Bay.

Coach Butch Smith, of Tenterfield, said he was happy with the performance

"We were unlucky against Rockhampton after being penalised for retaliation after one of our players was hit high," Smith said.

"The penalty turned the game as we didn't have the footy for the next six minutes and Rockhampton scored a converted try."

Smith said Purcell was a superstar.

"Our forward muscled up pretty well but we were a bit light out wide," he said.

"The Border blokes all did their job; Kyle Marsh and Jason Wilmot were two who pushed their claims for Central selection."
