Fears tourist body unravelling

DIRECTOR of Warwick Art Gallery and co-organiser of Jumpers and Jazz, Karina Devine, is calling on council to make up its mind sooner rather than later on the future of the Rose City's tourism body.

Councillors this week explained they understood the importance of the local events, following Warwick Tourism and Events shock decision to fold.

It is still unclear whether the board can make the decision to end the organisation or, because it is an arm of council, the local authority needs to make that call.

Council has been working on a new tourism structure for months and Warwick Tourism and Events chair Greg Newey said uncertainty about the future of the organisation was a factor in CEO Bev Marston's decision to leave and the board's reluctance to appoint someone new in times of uncertainty.

Mayor Ron Bellingham has suggested the new tourism structure will be discussed at the forthcoming council general meeting.
