Bowler is a matriarch to cap 40 years in the sport

BOWLS: Pat Cook was as proud as punch to receive her matriarch badge after turning 90.

She has played the game at Warwick East Bowls Club for the past 40 years.

The Warwick East life member has been patroness for the past eight years and in the past has been vice-president, games director and providore.

She has won singles, pairs, triples and fours titles at Warwick East. Her greatest achievement on the green was amassing six open singles championship wins.

Cook still comes to bowls every week.

"I roll a bowl whenever I can,” she said.

Why bowls?

Her answer is simple. After all the family left home, she married the next door neighbour Ted Cook and he was a bowler.

She remembers many enjoyable bus and car trips away to bowls.

"My furthest trip was to Gympie,” she said.

At the weekend, she was joined by relatives from as far as Cairns for a family party and many of the visitors were still in town for this week's presentation at Warwick East.

One family member presented her with a cardboard cut-out which created quite a lot of interest at bowls this week.
