Bowler win a monthly sports award with Warwick Credit Union
WARWICK cricketer Andrew McConnell took 7-8 for Maryvale Condamine near the end of the Condamine Cup season to win a monthly award.
McConnell also took four wickets for Warwick in a Mitchell Shield win against Stanthorpe and played for the shield-winning team.
He said the wickets in Warwick were a bit slower than in Ipswich or the Brisbane Warehouse competitions, which suited his bowling.
"I like to bowl the ball full, so I enjoy bowling on the Warwick turf wickets,” he said.
McConnell grew up at Glenore Grove in the Lockyer Valley and played cricket in Lockyer, Ipswich and Brisbane Warehouse competitions, as well as five seasons in Victoria with Boorcan, where he won a division two premiership in 2009-10.
He took two wickets and two catches for Boorcan in the grand final but wasn't required to bat.
In the 2017-18 Warwick season, McConnell and Redbacks paceman Tyhe Clarkson took the most wickets at 21.
While he admits he's a pace bowler who only bats when needed, he has a top score of 119 to his credit for Brothers in third division in Ipswich.
Before the 2017-18 season, McConnell and family moved to Warwick to operate a dairy farm at Clintonvale. He joined the Maryvale club which won the Condamine Sports Club Warwick Australia Day Carnival and the club premiership.
