Bowlers have field day in Warwick cricket

CRICKET: It was a day for bowlers in Warwick cricket as the fixture season ended with three Saturday games in the Condamine Cup.

The closest game was at Inglewood when the home side beat Sovereign Animals by 17 runs.

Railway Hotel Rascals beat Allora by five wickets at Allora and Warwick Hotel Colts proved they are premiership favourites in reserve-grade with a three-wicket win against A-grade leaders Maryvale Condamine.

The best bowling of the day was 5-50 off eight overs by Glen Doyle at Inglewood. Five bowlers each took four wickets in an innings.

At Inglewood, Sovereign captain Anthony Nero won the toss and elected to bowl on the Inglewood synthetic.

Darren Apted (21) got Inglewood off to a great start and was well supported by the top order with Brad Gibson (33) Troy Callaghan (19) and Tom McCosker (17). A late charge by Brent Bennett (34) including three sixes and Tim McCosker (29) including 2 sixes after drinks saw the Inglewood Roos race to 201 all out by the 33rd over. Doyle’s five-wicket haul was his first of the season.

Sovereign was 3-45 when Nero (78) joined Animals stalwart Tony Munro (65) to put on a 4th wicket partnership of 105.

With eight overs remaining and Sovereign needing 51 runs for the win, Apted bowled left arm offspin around the wicket to take the critical wickets of Nero and Munro. Nero was caught by a classic full length diving catch at mid-on by Tyler Wolfe and Wayne Fearby took a running catch at deep mid-wicket to dismiss Munro.

In the end, Inglewood restricted the middle order Sovereign batsmen with tight bowling from Brad Gibson and Tom McCosker in the final two overs to win by 17.

In the local derby at Allora, good bowling and a steady performance by captain Brad Johnson steered the Railway Hotel Rascals to an easy win.

Allora Batted first and was dismissed for 128, Cameron Masters top scoring with 26.

The best bowling was Liam Duncan with 4-37 off eight overs and Jake Christensen 4-25 off eight overs.

In reply, Railway Hotel Rascals was 5-130 with opener Brad Johnson carrying his bat with an unbeaten 51.

Tom Morris made 21 and Christensen was 20 not out.

Stewart Henderson took 1-4 off four overs to be the best for Allora with the ball.

Johnson said Christensen again impressed with his off spin.

“Jake dismissed four of their top five from Allora with three caught and one LBW,” Johnson said.

Friday night rain meant the Slade Park game on Saturday was moved to Hamilton Oval but that did not deter the Warwick Hotel Colts team which won by three wickets with 12 overs to spare.

Batting first, Maryvale made 150 with Jason Steketee hitting 38 and Pat Bourke 36. Spinner Shaun O’Leary took 4-24 for Colts.

Cameron Peterson followed up a double hat-trick last week with a top-scoing 49 and added a half-century partnership with Lachlan Gross who hit 34.

Scott McLennan took 4-21 off eight overs and Paul Bourke 3-35 off eight overs.
