Warwick Women's Golf
There is no doubt the weekend rain was a welcome sight and will make a huge difference to the deteriorating condition of the course. Although the course was not closed for play on Saturday, most ladies had no hesitation in finding something else to fill their day. The Monthly Medal that was programmed has now been rescheduled for this coming Saturday but names will have to be put on the new timesheet.
The upside of Saturday being washed out was the better than expected field that turned up for opening day on Sunday. The majority of the field was made up of mixed pairs including both the winners and runners-up. Congratulations to Liz and Eamon Cockram and Tracey Spinetti and Kieran Delaney on their great rounds. All other results can be read in the members' notes. Luckily the rain on Saturday cleared up in time for the Introduction to Golf session for 16 ladies who are also taking part in the Beginner's Clinics starting this week courtesy of our Get Out and Get Active Grant.
The enthusiastic group had plenty of questions for both Sam and the women's committee after a session of putting and chipping and a wine and cheese get-together in the Ladies' Room. More than 25 ladies have registered for Level 1 so we are looking forward to seeing lots of new faces out on the course. On Wednesday, 22 ladies persevered in hot conditions in the Sporters sponsored stableford. Gwen Mills scored a very creditable 36pts to win the event and Mary Young took out the runner-up trophy on a countback with 34pts. Balls in the run-down were won by Zel Crook, Carole Brandon, Jill Barnes and Joan Burt, the last with 31pts.
On the Warwick course particularly, we all know that the making of a good score depends largely on how we play the par 3s, so after finding Gwen Mills' name on at least four of the pins, her win was no surprise. The approaches were won by Gwen (2), Marg Adcock, Jill Barnes, Patsy McIntosh and Vicki Bennett and the new Pro Pin was taken out by Jill Barnes. The Pro Pin has just been reinstated by Sam so the committee is hoping that ladies will pay the extra dollar to enter it. The number of balls given out depends entirely on how many ladies enter, with all money being put back into balls.
It will continue to be an approach shot on the 7th hole for the time being, so if your approach is on the green anywhere, write your name on the Pro Pin as we don't know how many winners will receive balls until the whole field has nominated. Today's event is a single stableford for a chicken dinner donated by our good sponsors at KFC. Thanks Brad, from all the ladies, for a chance to have a night off.
On Saturday, the Monthly Medal for February will be played with all trophies donated by the Condamine Club Hawker Road. We are grateful to have the Condamine Club as our Monthly Medal sponsors for another year. On Monday, three members of the Women's Committee are heading out to Cecil Plains to represent us in the D&SW Executive Challenge.
Warwick Men's Golf
Some welcome rain put a dampener on the golf last Friday and Saturday with both competitions washed out. However, a big field of almost 70 turned out for the Opening Day 4BBB on Sunday, which was great to see. There was a big crowd at presentation and a good atmosphere around the club, so let's hope that is a sign of things to come for the golfing year ahead. It was a hotly contested event sponsored by Sam Eaves Pro Shop and Vicki and Terry Bennett from Suds Laundry, and the appreciation of the club goes out to these generous sponsors.
As mentioned, it was a hotly contested event with that good golfer Eamon Cockram and his talented wife Liz coming in late in the field to knock off the challengers. They had a great round, scoring 45 points, which gave them a clear advantage over runners-up Greg Wallace and Elly Casey, who scored 44 points.
The winning card was a thing of beauty once it was deciphered. It is a rare thing for a pair of "A” graders to win a mixed stableford, adding merit to their performance. The runners-up won that trophy on a countback from Kieran Delaney and Tracy Spinetti. That is the third time in recent weeks that Kieran has lost a countback. You will have to work on your back nine, Kieran.
Tracey has only been playing for a short while and shows great potential and it is only a matter of time before she wins an event. Another husband and wife team that are relatively new to competition golf took next place with 43 points in Danny and Anne Lyons. Then came Ian and Janine Stewart, Tony and Majella Kahler and Ken and Marge Burley on 42 points. The 7th pin went to Mal Galloway and the 11th to Charlie Morrison, while the men's Pro Pin saw Jay Roberts win 4 balls, Don Warrener 2, Shane Scotney, Dan Lyons, Brendan Landrigan and Kris McLennan one ball each.
The ladies were sharp with the approach on 11, resulting in Helen Olsen, Majella Kahler and Liz Cockram all being in the hole and again Janine Stewart was in the hole on the 16th. The other big news around the clubhouse on Sunday related to the magnificent efforts of Mick and Annice Payne, who determinedly submitted applications for a new mower grant. These efforts paid off big time, with $27,834 being granted for a machine to cut the rough areas. Great work Mick and Annice.
We now have 18 names paid up for the 2018 Condamine Steel Shootout, so don't miss your chance to be in this fantastic event. Your $30 one-off fee allows all Saturday scores from payment day for the rest of the year to count towards your best four scores. See Tony, Garry Adcock or Sam at the Pro Shop to be in the event. The washed-out Monthly Medal from last Saturday will now be played this coming Saturday. Captain Tony also announced on Sunday that as from next Sunday there will be a nine-hole medley competition for club members, which was well received from those present, indicating that there should be great support for this venture. See you next weekend on either or both Saturday or Sunday.
Langham Slashers Golf
On Sunday a good field teed off on the back nine to play for the monthly sponsored RSL day, thanks to the RSL for their continued support. Barry Hockings was our winner for the day posting a net 26, runner-up was Leigh Nisbet, who was only one shot back on net 27. Greg Wallace had the best gross with a 40 off the stick and also the least putts with 14, Greg also won the pin on the 13th and also had the longest drive. Ted King picked up the remaining pin and Peter Balfour was our Bradman ball winner for the day. Next week we play the front nine. Hope to see you all next week.
Allora Golf Club
Due to the weather there was no Percy's Fruit Sponsored Duck run played last Friday, however the weather was a bit kinder for Sunday's game. After the recent rains the course looked brilliant and with a good show up of players the winner for the Railway Hotel Monthly mug with a great score of 41pts was Jim Anderson. Well done Jimmy, great to see. Runner-up after a three-way countback was 'Rolling' Ray O'Leary on 37.
Rundown winners were Jimmy Pideon and Callum Chatto also on 37pts, and Russell Sparksman and Barry Brown Jnr both on 36. Approach for the 2nd went to Russell Sparksman, 11th Rougan Geraghty, 3rd and 12th went to Callum Chatto. Pins 4th Barry Brown Jnr, 13th Rod Simpson, no one took the 7th and the 16th went to 'Bazza'.
Congratulations to the winners and all players, thank you to the Railway Hotel for their sponsorship and to our workers for the work that continues to be done.
On a side note the Allora Golf Club wishes to express a safe and speedy recovery after his recent health scare to one of our past members, Barry Brown Snr. Barry organised our first ever 'Reconciliation' golf day in 2002 which was a great success.
This Tuesday is our 18-hole comp teeing off from 10am. All welcome to attend and on Friday teeing off from 2pm will be the Percy's Fruit sponsored Duckrun, then Saturday the 10th will be the Committee Challenge at Inglewood, and finishing Sunday, teeing off at 11.30am, will be for club trophies.
Another full week of golf, so don't forget your sandbuckets and great golfing to you all.
