Boxer takes one little step towards the Olympics

BOXING: Warwick Boxing Club member Jake Wyllie is one step closer to Olympic selection following a state title win in Brisbane.

He competed in the Queensland championships in the 63kg elite open division on the weekend at Fortitude Valley in Brisbane.

This is his first year in elite and he beat reigning champion Declan Corcoran from the Police Citizens Youth Club at Nerang on the Gold Coast.

As he is turning 19 this year, Wyllie is eligible to compete in open elite for the first time.

Warwick Boxing Club trainer Damien Lawler said Wyllie put three eight-second counts on his opponent in the third round on Sunday.

"Jake's left hook was his telling blow,” Lawler said.

The Warwick boxer won by a TKO in the final few seconds of the fight on Sunday.

He will now train for the next month in the run up to the Australian championships in Perth in late June.

"This tournament will be the start of Olympic selection and Jake will need to push through with wins to push his selection chances,” Lawler said.

"If he wins, Jake could be fighting for a title in Asia.”

Last month, Wyllie was joint winner of the Warwick Credit Union / Daily News Senior Sports Star of the Year Award after an outstanding 2018.

He has already competed internationally in Germany and Hong Kong and won bronze at the Arafura Games in Darwin.
