Boxer training for a state title later this month
BOXING: Karla Grant will compete in the Queensland boxing championships on September 22-24 after winning her first Queensland Golden Gloves boxing title late last month.
She is trained by her brother Beau Zwoerner, who runs the BoxR Gym at Seventeen Mile Rocks in Brisbane.
The boxer meets her trainer for a session at least once a week and on one occasion they met at Aratula for technical work in a park while her husband Addison and their children Azailia, 8, Malachi, 7 and Dominic, 2, spent time in the play area.
Zwoerner said if his sister fought well at the state championships, he would then look seriously at the possibility of her pushing for Commonwealth Games selection next year.
"But at this stage we are just looking at the next fight," he said.
"She has had three fights since her comeback earlier this year and lost the first two narrowly but was a lot sharper for the Queensland Golden Gloves.
"Karla has always loved boxing and I can tell the flame has not gone out on her boxing career.
"She first fought as a teenager before having a break from the sport and concentrating on family commitments."
In between training sessions with her brother, she trains under Chris Fox at the Warwick Boxing Club gym. She currently fights to the 51kg division and has lost 6kg since she started training.
