Boxing champ Daniel Geale stripped of title for Mundine bout

DANIEL Geale has been stripped of his WBA middleweight title for fighting Anthony Mundine instead of Gennardy Golovkin.

Geale was the unified WBA and IBF champion but that reign lasted a mere two months due to the controversial WBA ruling.

He had gained the WBA belt by impressively beating Felix Sturm in Germany in September, however his decision to fight fellow Australian Anthony Mundine next, instead of Golovkin, has prompted the governing body to take it back off him.

Golovkin won the interim title in 2010, but as he and Sturm never met in the ring in the following two years both fighters were bizarrely billed as champions.

This required Geale to fight Golovkin after Sturm to consolidate his status, rather than let Mundine contest his IBF title.
