Boxing event at WIRAC set to feature 30 fights

THE courts at the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre will come to life from 2pm Saturday when the Warwick Boxing Tournament kicks off.

Doors open at 1.30pm with the first fights at 2pm and going into the night.

The event is being co-organised by the Rose City and Warwick boxing clubs and it is likely up to 10 boxers from the two clubs will compete.

Rose City trainer Damien Lawler has nine pre-matched fights organised and hopes another 20 fights can be arranged on the day.

"Boxers are likely to travel from as far as Adelaide, Ballina, Lismore, Sunshine Coast and Roma,” he said.

"The majority of the visiting boxers will come from Brisbane and the Gold Coast along with members from Toowoomba PCYC and Pony Shaw's Boxing Club from Toowoomba.”

Admission is $15 adults, $10 children and children under 10 free. Saturday's tournament will be the first Queensland Boxing sanctioned tournament at WIRAC.

The ring, which has been donated free of charge by Chris Fox, will be set up by volunteers tomorrow afternoon.

The two clubs will have 20 volunteers between them organising the event.

Dr John Kiss will be the tournament doctor as the rules of boxing require the presence of a doctor at all fight tournaments.
