Boyd set to be handed Broncos captaincy

DARIUS Boyd's career resurrection is complete with the NRL star to be crowned captain of the Brisbane Broncos.

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett is expected to confirm the appointment of Boyd at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

Boyd has been the frontrunner to replace Corey Parker since Bennett declared at last year's presentation dinner that he could one day be a future captain of the club.

Leading the NRL's glamour club may have felt impossible for Boyd back in 2014 when he was admitted into a rehabilitation centre to deal with depression while at Newcastle.

He emerged a different person, quickly overturning the image he had infamously built for himself throughout the formative years of his career.

Having debuted for the Broncos in 2006, playing in the club's premiership team as a teenager, Boyd followed Bennett to St George-Illawarra and Newcastle before returning to Brisbane with the master coach in 2015.

He suffered a serious achilles injury upon returning, missing the first half of the 2015 season, but helped pilot the Broncos to within a few seconds of the club's seventh premiership.

Boyd, 29, last year evolved into the best fullback in the game, earning the No.1 jersey for Queensland and Australia.

Last week he declared he was ready to assume the captaincy duties.

"I'm ready for the captaincy," Boyd said.

"Being captain is something that is still foreign to me and something I will be learning if I do get the job.

"I would be learning on the run a bit, but we have a great leadership group to help out.

"Adam Blair, Sammy Thaiday, Andrew McCullough, Ben Hunt and Gillo (Matt Gillett), there are heaps of guys who lead by example and do some great things so whoever gets the role will have good support.

"Wayne hasn't told me if I've got the job. He likes to keep those things close to his chest and reveal it as late as possible.

"I'm happy just to have my name thrown up among some past and great players. There hasn't been a lot of Broncos captains so to even have my name mentioned is something I wouldn't have thought of a few years ago."

Boyd will join an illustrious list of league greats to have captained the club including Darren Lockyer, Allan Langer and Wally Lewis.
