Brabham car to drive Leyburn sprints
A HISTORIC Brabham racing car will be one of the major attractions at the 20th anniversary Leyburn Sprints this weekend.
The anniversary sprints have been dubbed a Brabham Tribute and Sprints media manager Chris Nixon said it was great news that the Brabham car would be transported from Sydney to do some demonstration laps.
"Shane Nicholls will drive the Brabham on the streets of Leyburn," Nixon said.
Sir Jack Brabham competed at the Leyburn Airfield circuit in August, 1953, in a Cooper Bristol racing car, known as the RedX Special
Before he became famous in England, Sir Jack was a speedway driver in Australia and bought the Cooper Bristol to start racing on tracks like Leyburn.
His only appearance at Leyburn was in 1953 when he won the Queensland Road Racing Championship.
Bathurst Armstrong 500 1965 winner Bo Seton and his grandson Aaron Seton will drive some demonstration laps in the Ford Capri which Bo and son Glenn raced in the 1983 Bathurst 1000.
While Glenn won't be at Leyburn, his son Aaron, a racing driver in his own right, will be in town.
Tickets are running out for the 20th anniversary dinner on Saturday night at the Royal Hotel, Leyburn.
Nine legends, Bo Seton, Bob Holden, John French, Jim Bertram, Brian Michelmore, David Harding, Bruce Allison, John English and Paul Stokell will be interviewed on the night.
Harding was the renowned former manager of the Lakeside and Surfers Paradise racing circuits and the other eight are champion drivers from yesteryear.
Bo Seton, French and Holden are the three Bathurst winners among the legends and Stokell is a three-time winner of the Australian Gold Star Championship and a Malaysian Grand Prix winner.
