Brave cancer campaigner never gave up on promise to fight

SHEREE McLeod (nee Hedrick) made a promise to her boys: that she would fight right to the end for them.

And that's exactly what the brave mother-of-two did.

"Sheree didn't give up until her last breath," her sister, Nikki Hedrick, said yesterday.

"She kept going; even though there had been so many obstacles.

"She had pure grit."

Survived by sons, Lachlan and Riley, and husband Wade, Sheree lost her long and courageous battle with breast cancer at 3.55pm Saturday, in Brisbane. She was 39.

She was surrounded by family, and during her last days friends near and far visited to say their final goodbyes.

"Our grief is a little less because everyone's support has been amazing," Nikki said.

"We had an idea that she had touched many people, but not to this extent.

"We (Sheree's family) want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts."

During the final days of her battle, friends from across the world, shared pictures, posts and helped spread the message Sheree hoped would become her legacy: Check your Boobies!

Even through her pain and while enduring treatment, Sheree was determined to spread her message.

Her drive and unwillingness to give in has, in one way at least, paid off.

Her message went viral and thousands of people are now helping to spread the word.

"She doesn't want anyone to go through what she had to go through," Nikki said.

This Saturday, To honour Sheree's legacy and do our part to spread the vital message of breast examination, The Daily Mercury will launch its own contribution to her 'Check your Boobies' campaign.
