BREAKING: Littleproud named in Turnbull cabinet
DAVID Littleproud has been named in the Turnbull Government cabinet only 17 months after taking over as Member for Maranoa.
The first term LNP backbencher was promoted in a suprise move and has been named Agriculture and Water Minister.
Mr Littleproud said he was called by Prime Minister Turnbull at 9.45am with the news.
"I'm blown away to be honest,” he said.
"It's a huge honour and the phone has been ringing hot.”
Mr Littleproud will fly to Canberra this afternoon for swearing in tomorrow morning.
Prior to being elected in July 2016, Mr Littleproud spent 20 years working in the agri-finance sector.
Since then he has been travelling to each corner of his huge electorate working for the farmers and people who live in Maranoa and say that isn't going to change.
"I really hadn't been focusing on the cabinet,” he said.
"If you focus on those higher honours, you tend to lose sight of the job at hand and the core responsibilities you took on.
"I've always had a passion for agriculture and the community right across Marano is intrinsically linked to agriculture.
"As always my primary focus will remain that policy settings are conducive to the primary producers and families of the Maranoa region.”
Mr Littleproud said there had been some talk of his elevation to cabinet.
"The Courier Mail mentioned I may be in the running this morning, but it wasn't until Malcolm called that I took any notice of that,” he said.
"I am very suprised and very honoured to have been give this role and this opportunity.
"It's going to be a huge change for me.
"I'll be sitting at the cabinet table, helping make decisions that affect the nation.
"It's a huge challenge and I'm very much looking forward to it.”
