BREAKING: Murder charges laid over Lakes Creek house fire

Police have charged a man following a tragic house fire which took the life of 47-year-old Mark Petersen.

Emergency services were called to the house fire at Hill St, Lakes Creek, at 2.36am on August 15, to find the two-storey home fully alight.

Mr Petersen's remains were found at 6.30am after the fire was extinguished.

Mr Petersen was the owner of the home and also the rental property across the road in Hill St, where police discovered an illicit drug laboratory the following day.

It is believed he lived alone in the house, however police said a number of other people visited frequently.

About 6pm Saturday night, a 39-year-old Rockhampton man, who was known to Mr Petersen, handed himself into Brisbane City Police Station.

He has been charged with one count each of murder and arson.

He will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today, September 16.
