Jaguar's Red, White and Blue sporting specials

THE Brits aren't normally shy when it comes to flag waving, and thanks to the delicious Jaguar F-Type sports car they arguably have every reason to.

So out come the Union Jack colours - Caldera Red, Glacier White and Ultra Blue - for the F-Type British Design Edition, an exclusive model based on the 280kW V6 S Coupe and Convertible offerings. Or for the less patriotic preferring their British Design Edition a tad stealthier, an Ultimate Black hue is also available.

Ian Callum, director of design at Jaguar, said the special edition cars "gave us the opportunity to subtly enhance the way the F-Type looks inside and out". Keeping the car in the news is a bonus too, as is slapping on a decent premium over a standard F-Type.

The British Design Edition Coupe V6 with rear-wheel-drive and manual gearbox will cost $166,650 - over $15k more than the 3.0 V6 S Coupe it's based on - when it goes on sale here in the second quarter of this year.

But there are tempters to help you dig deeper. Brit Editions score the Sport Design Pack (optional on the S model), comprising a gloss black front splitter, body-coloured side sill extensions and rear diffuser - plus a fixed rear spoiler for the Coupe. Unique to the Brit Edition cars are 20-inch Cyclone wheels with a satin grey finish, accessorised with British Design Edition centre caps.

The "Design" aspect of these special editions point towards aesthetic rather than performance enhancements, but while the 280kW/460Nm supercharged 3.0-litre V6s remain unchanged, uprated stopping power comes with Jaguar's Super Performance brake system with red or black callipers.

Premium Jet leather adorns the cabins, with contrast stitching of Red, Ivory and Reims Blue your choices. Carbon fibre trim replaces the centre console's aluminium while audio is enhanced using either a 380W 10-sepaker Meridian system or 770W 12-speaker Meridian surround sound system.

And as any good special edition should, the Brit Edition F-Types are awash with special badging. Outside, the front grille and tailgate feature monochrome Union Jack detailing to replace the red and green of the S roundel; the 14-way sports seats have embossed headrests, while there's more mono Brit branding on the tread plates and centre console carbon fibre.

Prices jump to $174,900 for the Coupe auto; $187,560 for the AWD Coupe auto and $192,680 for the AWD Convertible auto. Nobody said patriotism came cheap...
