Broncos show this could be the year with early win

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Brisbane Broncos back line proved too hot to handle for the Gold Coast Titans at the weekend.

With plenty of experience and fire-power at their disposal the Broncos cruised to a comfortable 38-10.

Working behind impressive new recruit Matt Lodge, Broncos halfback Kodi Nikorima was instrumental early in the match as his side asserted their dominance.

James Roberts was the main benefactor of that dominance scoring two of the Broncos four first half tries.

Roberts pounced on a Nikorima grubber to open the Broncos account. He was back on the scoresheet soon after - using his speed to ease past the Titans backline to secure an 8-0 lead for the Broncos.

With Nikorima pulling the strings the Broncos were almost out of sight by half-time with tries to Jonus Pearson and Jamayne Isaako securing them a 20-0 lead at the major break.

Broncos skipper Sam Thaiday was particularly impressed with Nikorima's performance early in the match.

"Early on Kodi took control and that was his job tonight," Thaiday said.

"He was our chief playmaker and he made sure he called the positions we wanted to get to on the field.

"We had to work to get there and make sure we put the ball in the right position for him."

Things didn't get any easier for the Titans in the second half with the Broncos once again relentless.

Playing in the second row Corey Oates staked his claim for a starting spot - breaking the line early to score a try.

Joe Ofahengaue then barged over for a try of his own and the Broncos were out to 32-0 lead.

Gold Coast halfback Alexander Brimson crossed the line midway through the second half but the Titans were left with too much to do.

Prop George Fai and Titans rounded out the scoring for the Broncos before Dallas Wells crossed for the Titans.

Speaking after the defeat Titans skipper Kane Elgey said coach Garth Brennan had focused on giving his young players an opportunity to state their case.

"He (Brennan) said before the game we all got the first shot. Now he'll choose a team for next week and we'll go from there," Elgey said.

"It's disappointing but I guess it's our first hit out for the year and there's no points involved.

"We had a young squad and the Broncos named a pretty strong side and we just wanted to step up and go through our defence.

"It's obviously not the result we wanted."

THE SCORE
