Bruce Highway unroadworthy again

STOP me if this sounds familiar.

The Bruce Highway is Queensland’s most unroadworthy road.

The highway was once again awarded the dubious honour after a record number of motorists responded to the RACQ’s Unroadworthy Roads survey to determine the State’s worst stretch of road.

More than 500 individual roads throughout Queensland were nominated as substandard, with an incredible 22% of motorists highlighting a section of the Bruce Highway.

For one road, no matter how long, to attract that kind of attention demonstrates that something in the planning and funding process has gone terribly wrong.

The Warrego Highway came in for similar treatment in the survey, with rough surfaces, poor road shoulders, a lack of overtaking opportunities and flooding issues only made worse by the recent weather issues.

Queensland’s Main Roads Minister has come out in support of the results and it can only be hoped the State-controlled roads nominated in the survey receive desperately needed funding in the upcoming State Budget.

The Budget is announced on June 14, so the Minister’s support could not be more timely.

Previous surveys have proven influential in securing funding for many road projects and RACQ will continue to lobby the relevant authorities to take the survey results into consideration.
