Scott wants federal funds

OUR Federal Member Bruce Scott said he had done everything in his power to ensure we get our fair share in the upcoming Federal Budget.

Mr Scott, the Federal LNP Member for Maranoa, said he created his budget wish list for the Southern Downs in consultation with councils, the chamber of commerce, community groups and agencies.

"My priorities have been bolded, highlighted and brought to the tables of my colleagues including the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister," he said.

"I believe it's my duty to make sure those who live in rural and regional areas get our fair share in these hard economic times."

FINGERS CROSSED FOR FEDERAL FUNDING

Mr Scott said it was a tough economic climate and highlighted that the Federal Government had a big task ahead of it this financial year.

The federal member said he would like to see the Melbourne-Brisbane Inland Rail project approved.

He said it would significantly improve freight movements in the Southern Downs and create jobs.

"I believe this project could take advantage of existing infrastructure in the Southern Downs and I've highlighted these options to the Deputy Prime Minister (Warren Truss)," Mr Scott said.

"This government is committed to deliver the Inland Rail over the next 10 years and this infrastructure, coupled with the new Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport near Toowoomba, is the springboard to growing the Southern Downs' economy, agriculture and horticulture."

He said he had not forgotten about the much-needed upgrade to the Eight Mile.

"We're also committed to improving safety, productivity and efficiency of road transport network but the Queensland Labor Government - which facilitates road planning and construction - must list the Eight Mile as a high priority to ensure this dangerous intersection ... is upgraded."

Mr Scott also listed the NBN, the construction of Emu Swamp Dam and upgrades to black spots on his wish list.

"During its five years in government, Labor had the five biggest budget deficits in Australia's history and now we're paying $1 billion a month in interest on that debt," he said.

"Like families, government must live within its means so that's why this Liberal National Coalition Government is about economic growth and job creation."
