FOR six years Bryana McGowan has been perfecting her hockey skills and her hard work has earned the 12-year-old a place in the Darling Downs team.

The Warwick West State School student is the first Warwick player to make a Darling Downs hockey team in at least two years.

Making the team involved a five-game trial session in Toowoomba.

"I really didn't think I would make it in," Bryana said.

But her father Mark McGowan said it was Bryana's speed and skill with the ball that secured her spot in the team as left-wing.

After making the team Bryana then had to participate in a two-week long training program in Toowoomba, which is where she got to know the other girls on her team.

Bryana said the training was a big step up from Warwick junior hockey.

"It was totally different," she said. "It was crazy, but I still liked it."

Tomorrow Bryana will head to the Gold Coast with the Darling Downs team, where they will take on nine other teams.

At the end of the competition there will be a play-off against the probable and possible players for the state team.

Bryana said she was just going with the flow and see where she ended up after the tournament.

"I just want to do this first and then see if it goes anywhere," she said.

The 12-year-old currently plays for the Warwick Green Dragons and said she just loved the sport.

"My favourite part about the game is getting to hit the ball," she said.

"It is a good sport that you can play with your family and friends."

And while it is the first time Bryana has made the Darling Downs hockey team it is not the first time she has donned the red, blue and white colours.

The speed demon has previously made the team for athletics, which saw her travel to Cairns.

Warwick hockey coach Phil Rolfe said Bryana was definitely a talented player.

"She has the speed to burn," he said.

"It is the start of a good future in hockey, she definitely has the potential."

McGowan said he was incredibly proud of what his daughter had achieved and grateful for the support from the Warwick Hockey club.
