Buckle up, tornado-like gusts expected

SECURE your loose items and close up the windows- heavy rainfall and tornado-like winds gusts are expected to hit the Southern Downs later this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issues a severe weather warning ranging from the Wide Bay Burnett area down to the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

"Destructive wind gusts up to 125 km/h and further tornadoes are likely," the warning said.

"Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is expected to continue over the Wide Bay and Burnett district and

Southeast Coast district, extending west to include the Great Dividing Range and the Granite Belt. Six hour rainfall accumulations in excess of 100mm are likely.

"This could lead to rapid river and stream rises.

"Widespread 24 hour rainfall accumulations in excess of 250mm are likely.

Emergency Management Queensland is urging Southern Downs residents to move their cars under cover, secure loose outdoor items and avoid walking or riding through flood waters.
