LETTER: Stanthorpe debt sheds some light

IT IS GOOD to learn that the old Stanthorpe Council did have a debt ($2.8 million) when forced amalgamation took place.

Many Stanthorpe residents thought that the old council was in the black, but it did contribute to the present council's ballooning debt of over $30 million.

Now we learn that a total of $786,000 of SDRC's debt comprises loans to sporting and recreational groups and being guarantor for a loan to the Warwick Redbacks AFL Club. Is it council's role to provide loans and guarantees to community groups? Why shouldn't those groups find their own funding?

The more we learn of the shenanigans of the SDRC our minds turn to the upcoming election next year when we can replace most of those who have led us into the horrendous debt that has resulted in increased rates and charges.
