Community Learning Hub students celebrate graduation
YOUNG adults with a disability in Warwick celebrated their graduation from an innovative work readiness course yesterday.
The students were part of a 10-week program focused on improving employment skills run by the Endeavour Foundation's free, Community Learning Hub.
Endeavour Foundation Service Development and Innovation Manager Chris Beaumont said the pilot program had exceeded expectations.
"The work readiness program is unique in the Warwick region and provides an educational service that supports young people with a disability, Mr Beaumont said.
"We are focused on delivering a short course to boost job skills and, in turn, give participants the confidence to pursue the job they want."
Held over 10 weeks, the program includes classroom workshops and online activities, as well as giving participants the chance to gain work experience with local businesses.
Students did on-the-job training at local radio station Rainbow FM, Warwick Bunnings and Aquabird Pet Centre.
The course content is developed by registered teachers employed by the Endeavour Foundation, who are experienced in the design and delivery of effective curricula for people with a disability.
Mr Beaumont said the pilot program had been so successful he would be trying to bring the concept to Brisbane.
"We want to provide the students different employment opportunities, making connections in the workforce and all students leave the program with a pathway plan for what employment they would like to do and that suits their needs," Mr Beaumont said.
"It's also a great chance for local businesses to connect with the Endeavour Foundation and see the work we do in the community."
A second course will begin on September 28 and will focus on more work experience opportunities and give students exposure to different working environments.
