Bullocks used the old-fashioned way on Southern Downs farm

BREATHING life back into a historic and near-forgotten way of working the land is Southern Downs farmer Rohan Morris.

Mr Morris was at the Warwick Show with his six animal bullock team, running demonstrations and chatting to interested onlookers.

As a younger man, he'd had the privilege of working with some of the last original bullock team drivers, men who'd been working that way their whole lives.

"I'm of the last generation to have that chance,” he said.

"Most of those old guys have passed on now.

"These days people have to learn the art from someone like me, who does it as a hobby.”

And it started out as just that.

"I was looking for something a little different to get into,” Mr Morris said.

"I like old junk and I like animals. And no one else around was doing it.”

But the animals aren't just for show.

"I use them around the farm to clear logs,” Mr Morris said.

"They can go places tractors can't and are very persistent. They'll keep trying until they've moved whatever it is they need to move.

Mr Morris hosts bus tours at his Gleneden Family Farm in Maryvale to watch the team at work.
