Bulls and Fire pay a visit to schools on Southern Downs
CRICKET: Australian pace bowler Billy Stanlake has tipped a strong Queensland Bulls start to the season during a visit to Warwick.
Stanlake was one of eight players from various Brisbane and Queensland squads in men's and women's cricket to visit four Warwick schools as part of Play Cricket Week.
"We have been training pretty well under new coach Wade Seccombe,” Stanlake said.
Last season, he made his one-day debut for Australia after a strong performance for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash.
"I would love the opportunity to play for Australia again but first have to worry about club cricket and then the Bulls,” he said.
Stanlake has no doubt the Australians will beat England in this year's Ashes.
He expects players like captain Steve Smith to continue their outstanding form.
"Steve is hard to bowl to as he moves around the crease so much,” Stanlake said.
"His record speaks for itself.”
Yesterday was the first time Stanlake had spent time in Warwick and he said he was impressed with the enthusiasm of the children at the two schools he visited, Warwick West and Glennie Heights state schools.
Sammy-Jo Johnson was in Warwick with seven menfrom the Bulls and Heat and said her major aim this season was to win the Women's National Cricket League with the Fire.
"We made the final last season but didn't put it together on the day,” she said.
"The Fire has had a tough pre-season.”
Johnson tipped a top season for Warwick player Delissa Kimmince.
"Little DK is working hard,” she said.
Sam Heazlett visited two schools and said some of the visiting players didn't realise how good the school children from Warwick were with their skills.
Test player Peter George said the new season was all about playing with your mates.
Stanlake, Johnson, Charlie Hemphrey and Lachlan Pfeffer visited Warwick West and Glennie Heights while Heazlett, George, Sam Truloff, Matthew Kuhnemann and Queensland Cricket official John Butterworth visited Warwick Central State School and St Mary's.
Kimmince is part of a Queensland Cricket contingent in Central Queensland this week.
Warwick paceman Mark Steketee has been training hard with the Bulls squad in the run-up to the 2017-2018 season but hasn't been part of the country trips.
