Bunnings snags help Warwick cubs get to Cuboree
IT'S become an Aussie tradition and this weekend the job of handing out piping hot Bunnings snags fell to Glennie Heights Scout group.
The group are in the process of raising much-needed funds to send their young and motivated members to Cuboree in Maryborough in September.
The huge event, which features cub scouts from all over Australia, will be held during the school holidays and cub leader Liz Kable said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the young cubs.
"At this point out of our 15 cubs at Glennie Heights, we have five going to Cuboree,” she said.
"But it's not a cheap exercise, it's $585 each for the kids, so there's a lot of work to be done to make sure we can all get there.
"Those costs will be paid by the families and from community fund raisers like this one.”
At Cuboree the young cubs will have the chance to engage in numerous activities they would never normally get to try, such as whale-watching.
"It's such a huge event, and these kids are all between seven and a half years of age and 11, so it's an incredible learning experience and a great chance to make a lot of new friends,” Ms Kable said.
"I'm heading along this year, and I'm really looking forward to it, it will be my first Cuboree.”
The group is also currently fund raising to send their older kids, the scouts to Jamboree in South Australia in January, at a cost of $2500 each.
Ms Kable said cub scouts was an invaluable organisation for kids.
"It gives them a chance to get outside, away from technology and have some fun, as well as learning valuable life skills,” she said.
"We canoeing and kayaking, abseiling, do first aid course and learn a lot of survival skills as well.”
Young cub James Kable said he loved being a cub.
"The activities are a lot of fun,” he said.
"We also learn a lot about other countries and their cultures.
"We recently held a harmony day and learnt about Italy.
"I know they eat a lot of pasta and we also learnt some Italian words.”
James said he was looking forward to going to his first Cuboree.
"I'm really excited about it,” he said.
"The activities look amazing and it will be great to meet cubs from all the other places as well.”
