Controlled burns can cut power

BURN-OFFS are a necessity coming into bushfire season but Ergon Energy is concerned about power disruptions burning off can cause.

Ergon Energy corporate communications manager Rod Rehbein said Warwick was among the places of concern.

"We have concerns for virtually every part of regional Queensland based on the excellent growing conditions followed by the dry spell that means there's plenty of fuel for bushfires and also many property owners looking to burn off," he said.

Manager of Regional Services Craig Harris said the community faced the problem of bushfires and burning off annually and quite often wooden power poles were destroyed.

"Following favourable wet seasons in recent years, there is an abundance of on-ground fuel and a heightened level of alert for Ergon Energy, fire authorities and property owners alike," he said.

Mr Harris said it was not just about the significant impact on the company.

"There is also the added inconvenience placed on the community through unnecessary disruption to the power supply," he said.

"Obviously, when a pole is burnt down, the power lines are brought down as well and this is something we are very concerned about from a public safety perspective."

Mr Harris said if people saw a pole alight they should advise Ergon Energy and the fire authorities and then try to contain the blaze if safe to do so.

When planning a burn-off
