Burning through the rubber on the Morgan Park track

WHILE most of the people at Morgan Park for the third round of the Australian Motor Racing Series this weekend were there for fun, one group was well and truly on the job.

The Pirelli Tyres team, based in Melbourne are the category supplier for the GT-1 Australia racing events and were in full-swing as racing got under way today.

Team member Mitch Allsop said they had followed the GT-1 event all around the country.

"Some of these cars use special tyres that only Pirelli make,” he said.

"And in the GT-1 category all new tyres the cars need have to come from us.”

With their semi-trailer and massive set-up it's easy to see racing tyres is big business.

"The GT-1 field has 13 cars and each car is allocated two set of slick tyres and two sets of wet tyres,

"That's more than 200 tyres just for that event, and then there's the other categories.

"All the other drivers here can buy from us as well.”

Mr Allsop said it came down to individual team budgets.

"These are gentlemen drivers,” he said.

"There's no prize money at these events, they do it purely for the love.

"But there's a lot of money going into it, most of these guys are businessmen and have the funds to throw into it.

"There's a great community as well, everybody is mates with everybody else and they have a lot of fun.”

Team member Tim O'Dwyer said the travel was all part of the job.

"We were on Phillip Island last weekend,” he said.

"So it's the southern ocean to the Southern Downs,” he said.

"It's great fun though.”

Trying to figure what went wrong in his first race was 19-year-old Canberra driver Zane Morse.

"We broke a diff arm, so it wasn't a great result first up,” he said.

"It's all a learning experience though.”

Mr Morse said he started out racing karts as a seven-year-old, before moving to Legend Cars in the past few years.

"They run on a four stroke motorcycle engine,” he said.

"And they're tiny with a short wheel-base, you can feel absolutely everything, so it's much like driving a kart.”

Mr Morse said he loved being a part of the events and travelling the country.

"It's so much fun, the adrenaline is amazing when you're at top speed,” he said.

"It's great that we have these events so regularly, it helps you to not get rusty and stay in the right mindset.”

Racing continues tomorrow from 8.30am. Entry for spectators is $20.
