Hobby blossoms into business

HIDDEN among the gum trees, the little retreat known as Barigna Nursery is waiting for you to discover it.

Just off Killarney Road, this unique nursery has something to tickle everyone’s fancy.

Baringa Nursery owners Paul and Cathy Ryan opened the business just over two years ago and haven’t looked back.

Mrs Ryan said it started out as just a hobby.

“My husband and I loved gardening and for a while we were only open weekends,” she said.

“Now we are open five days a week, Wednesday to Sunday.

“After a while, when the nursery started to become a little more popular, we opened up the cafe,” she said.

“Seeing as the nursery is a little drive out of town, we thought that people would like to enjoy a coffee while out and about.

“The cafe serves tea and coffee, light meals, cakes and slices, which are all homemade,” she said.

“We have also created many areas in the nursery for people to just sit and enjoy their coffee in peace and quiet.”

Mrs Ryan said that she and Mr Ryan had tried to also create example gardens for their customers.

“Over the time, we’ve built little gardens around the nursery to show people examples of established plants,” she said.

“We’ve also attempted to create example garden features, such as rock walls and patio areas.”

Last month Baringa Nursery also introduced “pizza weekends”.

The pizzas are homemade and are also cooked in a wood-fire oven in the gardens.

Customers can sit around the garden patio and enjoy hot, fresh pizza just after it comes out of the oven.

But wait, there’s more.

The Ryans are also proud supporters of their local community and have a gallery room showcasing local talent.

From paintings to sculptures, anything art and craft can be found.

Mrs Ryan said there were many clever people around the Downs.

“A lot of our sculptures and features have been done by locals, from the little iron animals in the garden to the coloured glass walls,” she said.

Baringa Nursery also has a great range of native plants, citrus trees, flowers and seedlings.

It also has a great range of sandstone garden items such as mailboxes, stepping stones and garden edging.
