Cafe owners encouraged to support produce market

FRESH produce will be back on the menu this weekend when the Warwick Uber Markets combines with the Seasonal Feast Farmers Market for the first market of the new year.

Market coordinator Mel Forbes has called for local businesses to support the market's move to Warwick.

"The co-op store has been operating in Stanthorpe on a weekly basis and now will be in Warwick once a month," she said.

"It would be great to see local cafes or restaurants come on board and showcase their own dishes to add some flavour to the markets.

"We are on the lookout for a variety of local producers like flower sellers, nut producers, meat producers or anyone who would like to volunteer as there is always a job to do."

Andrew O'Dea owns Kelvin Falls Family Farm and is a familiar face at the farmer's markets.

Mr O'Dea said while he couldn't make the markets this Saturday he would be one of the many producers to come to Warwick each month for the markets this year.

"It is a really good outlet for local producers," he said.

"The eggs we sell at the markets are a little bit of a sideline project for us.

"We mainly do direct beef sales to clients, but if there is enough demand we will look at possibly increasing the number of eggs we produce."

Warwick hot spots Bluebird and the Cherry Tree Cafe source produce from Kelvin Falls Family Farm.

Mr O'Dea said the partnership had been mutually beneficial.

"If there are a few cafes and restaurants looking for a good local product but don't want to go very far the markets are great," he said.

"The Seasonal Feast Farmers Market is a great way to put the two together."

The combination of local producers and cafes is something Mrs Forbes would like to see become more commonplace.

"We would like to extend an initiation to local cafes to come along and source seasonal produce to use for their daily menu," she said.

"We would love to see them there nice and early and have first pick of the amazing range of produce we have on display.

"The big focus is on meeting the producers."

The farmers markets are held every Friday in Stanthorpe but will come to Warwick on the second Saturday of each month.

The markets will host an array of produce including in-season Granite Belt stone fruit, honey, Auntie Bads beautiful relishes and jams, Kialla flour, strawberries and boysenberries.
