CALEB Gundy will undergo more surgery today, in another step on his long road to recovery.

Caleb, 8, suffered severe burns to more than 45% of his body on June 7, after lifting a lid on a drum fire at his Millmerran home.

He remains in an induced coma at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane and faces surgery every Tuesday and Friday.

His mother Jodie Silver has stayed by his side and said the family was taking things "day by day".

"Every day I hear good news, hear bad news ... we just have to keep positive," she said.

"Basically for the next seven weeks, there will be skin grafts done and then there's the process of Caleb having to adapt.

"He gave us a fright (last) Tuesday and Wednesday night when he went into cardiac arrest.

"But they've checked his heart and they said there isn't an issue there."

Ms Silver was treated for burns to her hands at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital the same night Caleb was airlifted to the Lady Cilento Hospital.

She said her injury barely rated a mention compared with her young son. "We don't know how much he is going to recall," she said.

"But when we are in the room and talking, he can still hear everything.

"He is reacting to hearing us. "

Caleb's father Allan Gundy now faces regular trips from his Millmerran home to support both his wife and son.

Ms Silver said travel expenses were a concern, but the trips were needed.

Accommodation has been provided for her through the Ronald McDonald House at the children's hospital.

Ms Silver thanked the Queensland Ambulance Service and RACQ CareFlight crews for their swift response and assistance.
