Callous theft desecrates cemetery
CCTV may have to be installed at Warwick Cemetery after its entrance was desecrated by the theft of valuable plants.
Police investigating the callous theft, which happened overnight on Tuesday, say the 10 Eremophila (also known as Emu bush plants) could turn up at market stalls or in someone's garden and it was "unacceptable" to society.
Cemeteries supervisor Mark McGowan said it was difficult to put a value on the slow-growing plants, which were planted over two years ago and were at a good stage.
He said it was this time last year trees were taken from the cemetery.
"One was chopped and the other two were dug out," he said.
"They seem to be people that know what they're doing because they know how to remove them to keep them alive."
One Christmas day another hedge was ruined by thieves who strategically helped themselves to plants.
"These people are robbing from the community," Mr McGowan said.
"It's mindless."
He said it would be unfortunate if the community had to wear the cost of CCTV, but possibly necessary to protect the cemetery.
Police are appealing for help from witnesses.
