Campbell cruises to maiden victory

MOTOR SPORT: After a third and two fifths in the first three rounds of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, Warwick driver Matt Campbell has broken through for his first win.

After qualifying fastest, Campbell started from pole position, leading from start to finish on the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

Campbell now sits in third position in the standings for the Supercup, with a trip to Silverstone in the United Kingdom on the cards for this weekend's race.

The win on Sunday in Austria was his second in the Red Bull Ring after he won a round of the German Porsche Carrera Cup last month.

The 22-year-old was overjoyed with the maiden win, and Campbell said he had family on hand to watch the achievement.

"I'm really happy. If I'm honest, I was a little relieved when I crossed the finish line. When you start from pole position you want to win. I managed to do this and I'm thrilled,” he said.

The win came in just Campbell's fourth race in the class, backing up from strong showings in the opening three rounds, where he recorded a third and two fifths.

A strong start proved the catalyst for Campbell, who was never headed during the 16-lap event on the Austrian circuit.

Even though a safety car was required during the middle stages of the race, Warwick-born Campbell maintained his nerve to finish ahead of Michael Ammermuller and Dylan Pereira.

The victory moves Campbell up to third in the Supercup standings on 60 points, closing the gap on leader Ammermuller (78) and Norway's Dennis Olsen (64).

The race was a precursor to the Forumla One race, in which Australian Daniel Ricciardo finished third, earning the West Australian his fifth straight podium finish.

Ricciardo now sits in fourth in the Formula One standings.

Next weekend's event in Silverstone begins on Friday, with Campbell full of confidence, and determined to cut further into the lead of Germany's Ammermuller.

The win continues a memorable 2017 for the up-and-coming Campbell.

Campbell placed second with co-drivers David Calvert-Jones, Patrick Long and Marc Lieb in the Bathurst 12-hour race.

He is also set to compete in the Pirtek Enduro Cup, partnering up with last year's winner Shane van Gisbergen.

The accolade is awarded to the drivers with the best record over the course of the three endurance races on the V8 Supercar calendar, which are the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 600.
