Canberra trip reward for Zac's continued success
ATHLETICS: Zac Caterson has won medals in club, school and Little Athletics competitions already this season and spent four days at the Australian Institute of Sport.
The Warwick State High School student won gold medals in discus, shot put and javelin for Warwick in this year's Little Athletics state championships. His 16.39m was a record in shot.
He was invited to a talent camp at the AIS in Canberra but had to nominate one event for specialist coaching.
"I chose javelin and learnt a lot about technique in Canberra and some specific strength exercises,” Caterson said.
He competes in club athletics for Ipswich and District and this year received the award for highest points for a male in track and field and the award for club rookie of the year, which was largely based on winning javelin at the nationals in Perth in March with a throw of 46m.
This year he won javelin at Darling Downs schools level with a new record and was second in shot put and discus.
He went on to win gold in javelin, silver in shot put and discus at state level and is now eyeing off the junior nationals in Sydney in March.
Each Saturday, he trains for all the throws under coach Michael Moore in Ipswich and during the week his father Paul Caterson coaches him in javelin in Warwick.
Caterson said javelin was a really fun event and the best of his throws at present.
"My favourite is discus, shot put is all right,” he said.
