Candidate keeps bastards honest

WITH a federal election on the way, one candidate is out campaigning to keep the bastards honest.

Brisbane-based psychologist Paul Stevenson is Queensland's lead senate candidate for the Australian Democrats.

Heading into his fourth election, Mr Stevenson kicked off his campaign tour with a visit to Warwick yesterday and assures the Democrats, while dwarfed by the two major parties, are still active.

"There's no confirmation of when the election will be just yet but I'm just trying to get the name out," he said.

"I'm doing a bit of a pilot run this week around Ipswich, Warwick, Toowoomba and Gatton before heading up north."

Mr Stevenson said while mental health and asylum seeker policy are particularly close to his heart, the Democrats were concerned with employment and regional development policies.

"We support policies that underpin quality vocational training and keep people in meaningful, properl-paid work," he said.

"To ensure Australia reaps the maximum value from population growth, our major regional centres must be carefully expanded."
